Who here is a vegetarian or vegan?
Here are the common responses that I get from people-
“Well there goes your muscles since you’re no longer eating chicken as you’re not getting any protein”
“Your bones will become brittle and weak so you’ll get osteoporosis soon since you’re not drinking milk for calcium”
“You will become anaemic as you’re not eating red meat for iron”
I’m here to dispel these myths and tell you where we get our protein, calcium and iron from without eating any animal products. Here’s a food for thought- cows, horses and elephants are some of the strongest animals in the world and they drink water and eat grass. They don’t supplement with vitamins and protein powder to be big and strong. Gorillas will only eat fruit and some leaves, yet they are very strong and they have similar DNA from us. So where do they get their calcium, protein and iron from if they’re not eating other animals and drinking milk?
Did you know that a blade of grass has every known scientific study of vitamin A and C, magnesium, calcium and every single nutritional component? That’s where the power of vegetable lies! The mainstream society would like us to believe that people who are vegetarians and vegans don’t get any calcium, protein or iron as they only come from animals which is not true!
Protein is photo synthesis from plants, sunlight and nitrogen. Plants are made from pure protein. Capsicum has high protein. If you kill an animal, you’re eating their protein as secondary source. If you eat plants you’re eating protein as first source which is healthy.
Here are examples of protein based wholefood- nuts, almonds, hemp seeds, chia seeds, lentils, plants, fruits, spirulina, quinoa, vegetables such as peas, spinach, kale, broccoli, sprouts, mushrooms, Brussel sprouts, artichokes, asparagus and corn.
The dairy industry would like us to believe that we only get calcium drinking their products for big strong bones which is also not true!
Other sources of calcium derived from wholefood include nuts, grains, almonds, hazelnuts, oranges, blackstrap molasses, dried figs, vegetables such as broccoli, bok choy, cabbage, pumpkin seeds, okra, collards, turnip green, prickly pear, kohlrabi, leeks, brazil nuts, artichokes, avocadoes, celery, green beans, coconut meat, onions, gooseberry, fennel, dandelion greens, swiss chard, spinach, kale, butternut squash, Brussel sprouts, mulberry, cabbage, sapote, sesame seeds, asparagus, basil, watercress and parsley.
The meat industry would like us to believe that we would be anaemic if we didn’t eat red meat as that’s the only sources of iron, which is simply not true!
Here are natural sources of iron- coconut milk, olives, spirulina, dark chocolate, blackstrap molasses, and dried thyme. Legumes such as lentils, chickpeas, soybeans, tofu, tempeh, peas and beans. Grains such as quinoa, spelt, amaranth, brown rice, barley, oats and rice. Nuts and seeds such as cashews, almonds, macadamias, tahini, pumpkin seed, squash, pine, pistachios, sunflower seed, flaxseed and sesame seed. Vegetables such as sundried tomato, Swiss chard, collard greens, arugula, spinach, broccoli, kale, potato, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and mushrooms. Dried fruit such as raisin, prune, apricot, and mulberry.
As you can see, us vegetarians and vegans have a wide range of wholefood to choose from to get our protein, calcium and iron from, which is not just limited to animal products!
Did you know that some of the greatest and strongest bodybuilders are actually vegan?
These include Ed Bauer, Derek Tresize, Ivan Blazquez, Joe Monk Coleman, Torre Washington, Greg Moormann, Amanda Riester, Dusan Dudas, Jim Morris, Patrik Baboumian, Alexander Dargatz, Joel Kirkilis, Kenneth Williams, Robbie Hazeley and Denise Nicole.
So now you know that being vegetarian or vegan does not mean that we will become weak and shrivel since we are not capable of building muscles without eating chicken for protein as the vegan bodybuilders I’ve mentioned above dispelled that myth! Nor will our bones become brittle and weak so we will get osteoporosis sooner since we’re not drinking milk for calcium. Or we will become anaemic faster since we’re not eating red meat for iron.
